This one was submitted by Derek Rainbow. We can't decide if the word 'are' is correct.
With 'thing' being singular shouldn't the word be 'is'? Or is 'are' correct because 'prices' is plural?

Another poll from Derek Rainbow. He writes:
Emblazoned across my pipe tobacco pouch is the statement:
'Smoking can damage the sperm and decreases fertility'.
It simply doesn't sound right to me. We need either a can after and, followed by decrease, or replace and with which.
Since the word can applies to the possibility of something, one has to assume that smoking may, or may not, damage the sperm. If it does, the decrease in fertility would probably be the result - i.e. cause and effect. If it does not, fertility would not be decreased as a result.
Maybe the health warning should read:
'Smoking can damage the sperm and can decrease (not decreases) fertility'.
Food for thought?
